With an elevation of 10,947 feet, Beartooth Pass is definitely deserving for making it among the top in the list of the most sought out attractions under the big sky state. Beartooth Pass is in the highest point of elevation along the All-American Beartooth Highway located within the Northern Rocky Mountains. The late Charles Kuralt of CBS regarded Beartooth Highway as “the most beautiful drive in America.”
The Beartooth Highway spans a total travel area of 68 miles, beginning approximately at an elevation of about 6,400 feet from Red Lodge and up to Cooke City at an elevation of 7,500 feet near the North East entrance of Yellowstone National Park. It is between these two lower points of elevation that the Beartooth Pass is located, offering an incomparably captivating 360 degree view of the rugged Montana sceneries of breathtaking mountains and beautiful lakes below.
An exhilarating wind of switchbacks and steep zigzags will take you to one of the most memorable road travels of your life time ever, even as you traverse through different ecosystems, such as pine tree forest and alpine tundra all within the 111 kilometer, two hours trip.
At the top, you can savor the pristine beauty of numerous glaciers, and even more amazing to the sight are the various glacier fed lakes. Here, you can see snow persisting even at summer months. When late June starts and through the month of July, the tundra animates with life, stunning visitors with displays of wildflowers such as columbine and shooting stars.
Taking the stunning views aside, you are also treated with fresh air, which by itself adds more beauty to the experience. Add to that the rare experience of interacting with friendly wildlife species such as the little chipmunks, and of course, the fact that the Beartooth Highway takes you to the Yellowstone National Park, and you’re all set to having a series of stunning nature experiences all its own.
